Ehh I have the most faith in matrix but it definitely isn’t perfect and barely a discord replacement .
I think that is one of the problems. People want an exact copy of discord but don’t ask if discord even has the perfect layout and if it should be copied directly. Anyway there are clients like cinny which look similar and other chat platforms like stroat(previously revolt) and spacebar which look exactly like discord and they are not doing massively well either so shrugs.

Matrix is probably the most well funded and supported open source platform that might be able to compete with Discord but even then it’s not a fair fight.
Sadly most people won’t leave discord. People will forget about this next week.

I mean they all do. Big corporations are not our friend. Some are good at making us feel like friends but truly at the end of the profit matters.

I am pretty sure they only do in attempt to attract devs. Once Epic were to get a majority position in the market they would quickly raise it to 30% too. None of these companies are “good guys” or actually care about the end consumer.

The ecosystem is really seamless, especially with a MacBook and Apple watch in the mix.
Though I don’t think there is any winning in the smartphone space. There is a duopoly and even if you personally use graphineOS you still are benefitting and helping the Google ecosystem by using Android apps.
Sadly I don’t think we can “vote with our wallets” on smartphones. We need legal legislation that forces both Apple and Google to be consumer friendly.

Ya a few apps already do this. YouTube premium does for sure and I have heard a few others doing so.

Ya I always subscribe on the website. Google and Apple have both charged extra fees for monthly subscriptions bought within the app.

Iirc it has to do with “monthly subscriptions” and they are arguing that Patreon is a monthly subscription and those get charged at the higher amount.
It’s why subscribing to YouTube premium within iOS app costs more because Google just makes up the difference that way.
Not that’s it’s right but it’s really debatable if Patreon should be considered a monthly subscription the same way streaming services are.

Many do but it’s a nightmare for SEO. When people use Substack or Medium it’s because they have built in social network that allows strangers to easily find your blog. Sadly independent blogs don’t really make money unless you are already famous with a network to follow you.

They are based out of the USA aren’t they? Luckily there are many Nextcloud providers in EU and email like mailbox.org

What’s even more sad is that in the USA it’s seen as woke to give up your gas stove.

Linux as we know it being very customizable and having many choices will never work for mass market. If Linux becomes a truly mass market consumer OS then it will be within walled garden of a large corporation like Google or others.
Everyday people want a computer with a brand name they recognize and for it to just work with all the big name software they know already. They likely won’t even know they are using Linux, it’s something us nerds will know but to them they are just using Google, Microsoft, Meta, or whoever else gets Linux to mass adoption.

Tbh as long as the libreoffice extraction stays free then no problem imo.

I meant to say abandoned, no clue why it autocorrected to that on my phone.

LibreOffice is based on OpenOffice but OpenOffice is basically abandoned with every few updates or improvements over a good handful of years now. LibreOffice is generally seen as the successor and I wouldn’t be surprised is OpenOffice just gets archived.

Was really disappointed when she came out to be transphobic.

Pretty sure Spotify approves of it. They don’t care about artists they are there for profit.
Honestly idk why people are so mad at the wrong people. They are doing this for concern of following the laws that are being passed in many jurisdictions. Some of which required “operating systems” to store date of birth that apps can access. What that means and what even is an OS is heavily up to debate.
Either way people need to call their lawmakers and be mad at those passing these laws.
