This was pretty much my impression of /e/ as well. Used it only briefly. It ran poorly, had a bunch of crap I didn’t want. Bad launcher. Things didn’t work properly.

Overall impression I got was that the people who make /e/ do not know what they are doing.

While the GrapheneOS dev comes across as sus and toxic to me, part of me would like to give it a try. But between Pixel phones still having black screen of death problems, and newer ones lacking a headphone jack - I found a Moto G100 plus LineageOS with MicroG is a great option.

I only run open software on it, and keep everything proprietary on my old un-degooglable phone that only gets turned on when necessary.

Trying to find relevant information that’s supposed to be in a Discord server is one of the most hair-pulling aggravating experiences I’ve ever had on a computer. I mean seriously, any aspiring software developer of any kind should outright feel ashamed if they are relying on Discord for anything related to their project. Code repository sites are free, made for that purpose, and already offer everything necessary for collaboration. If communications are necessary, that’s what email is for - everyone has it already.

And yeah I also hate the over-dependence on Facebook. If a companies “site” is their fb page, they don’t get my business.

These things are successful not because they’re good. It’s because they’re easy and convenient. That’s the biggest thing we need to keep in mind when it comes to alternatives.

Yeah to be honest, as a regular user I find Matrix’s ux to ve at least somewhat less of a clusterfuck than Discord. Some things are still unintuitive, but that’s nothing rtfm shouldn’t be able to fix.

Maybe we can use this as an opportunity to use different tools for different purposes. Text chat is the easy part, evidently. The issues seem to be around voice/video/group chat on one side, and forums/wikis on the other.

What we need to recognize for one thing is how Discord makes it easy to host info repositories, but sucks at making that stuff accessible. We need a decentralized platform that makes it easy for someone to sign up and create their own forums and wikis in a user-friendly point and click manner that Discord does, but makes those same hubs optionally public and viewable for users without having to join anything.

Then for more live-oriented stuff, Matrix is already the most mature, established, closest thing to Discord we have. We just need it to be better at voice, video, screen-sharing, etc. If I understand correctly, that’s already being worked on.

Hell, maybe the former could very well be implemented on top of Matrix itself even.

I keep researching alternatives, and every time I circle back around toward Matrix, despite criticisms. Part of it is a question of what everyone is using. I pretty consistently see that groups who use or used to use irc are now using Matrix additionally or as a replacement.

Part of me would like xmpp to be the best answer, but I’ve yet to see an implementation that handles public communities well, particularly for anything that functions at all like Discord. Matrix seems to be at least gaining voice/video chat support?

The last time I looked into Stoat (back when it was Revolt), they had basically no cryptographic capabilities enabled. Have they added any e2e features at all yet? Like, the overall impression I got from them it is that it’s being developed mainly by someone who seems pretty new to programming in general, and that makes me feel pretty cautious.

Hypothetically it should have. Those were additional fields that I added to the main account login entree, in order to keep all the relevant data in one place.

No but your files are not stored as text files. That’s not what you’re paying for. You’re paying for the development of the software used to create, store and fill them at the appropriate times and places. If you don’t care about that, just keep them stored as text files on your computer. Boom, problem solved.

As for the data, luckily it was for an account I don’t need or use anymore, so I just deleted everything and moved on.

Uh no. First off, I’m not on the free tier. I’m not on the most expensive tier, but I do pay for my account $4.99 monthly. Second, I used the built in features exactly as intended. Every login entree in Proton Pass has the option to add additional fields that you can name. That’s what I did, every security question being the name, and every answer being the data filled in. There was nothing to circumvent, because at least according to their pricing plans, even the free tier claims to allow unlimited logins.

I’m sorry, but what? Number one, we’re talking about text. Bytes of data, which costs next to nothing to store. If you think that it is in any way fair for a company to allow a person to enter information into an account, and then unexpectedly charge them to access that same data, you are insane. If you paid for a storage rental, moved your belongings into it, and then found that the company changed the lock and decided you had to pay more to get your stuff - would you continue renting that storage?

It’s in Proton Pass. When you create an account entree, there is an option to create additional fields that you can name and fill out, kind of like multiple notes in one file. Somehow I was able to create those fields on my account just fine, but then to be given access to that data it turned out that I had to upgrade my account. In other words they duped me into entering data at no extra cost, but then charged me to access that same data later on.

Nothing is free, but there are proper ways to sell open-source and still respect user freedom. Proton’s model is no different than Ubuntu’s or Google’s model. It’s a grift.
