A boss’ job is not to babysit. Keep the higher ups off the team’s backs, run the management infrastructure needed for stuff like project planning, stuff like that. I am not at my desk for my whole work day. However not once has anyone been less than very pleased with my output. More time at my desk would not mean more work - it would mean less. The recharge time I take means that I almost universally have a good attitude at work and I’m good at untangling problems that others either can’t deal with or are avoiding dealing with.

Forcing presenteeism rather than a results-based approach is utterly idiotic.

I was making a parallel to another wildly over-hyped technology that has had multiple opportunities to make it when it’s clearly only suitable for niche usecases.

LLMs and “AI” are not useless but the notion that they’ll lead to something significantly more advanced is fundamentally misunderstanding the nature of the technology.

Yeah, same. I use a combination of Linux and macOS at home but have a work laptop running Windows. It’s dreadful and feels like it only exists to make my tasks harder. I never find myself saying “what a useful feature!” but I often say “Ugh, why are you like this?”.

Sure, but if the options are to watch something in low resolution or not at all, I’m picking up the novelisation instead.

Similarly I find it very useful for if I’ve written a tool script and really don’t want to write the command line interface for it.

…then I fix its rubbish assumptions and mistakes. It’s probably not drastically quicker but it doesn’t require as much effort from me, meaning I can go harder on the actual function (rather than keeping some effort in reserve to get over the final hump).

I’ve seen it generate working unit tests plenty. In the sense that they pass.

…they do not actually test the functionality. Of course that function returns what you’re asserting - you overwrote its actual output and checked against that!

Is there something you know that you’d like to share with the class? I’m phrasing it snarkily because you’re being dismissive, however the question is genuine. What is it that you know that I don’t?

I’m reminded of an old joke about the Conservatives:
“But what are our actual policies?”
“The last thing we’re going to do when ahead in the polls is talk about policies!”

My point being that Reform seem to be polling well but unless all the other parties decide to do literally nothing, so what? The polling at the time of an election is what matters.

Are the other parties just going to give up and go home? They’re far too power hungry and self serving for that…

Okay, but the next general election is literal years away. Treating them as an inevitability feels short-sighted.

Is there any data to back this up (e.g. YouGov polling)? The general election isn’t for ages and we’ve just collectively decided that these idiots can have power next because it’s their turn…?
