We’re so damn lucky that LLMs are a dead end (diminishing returns on scaling even after years of hunting) and they just pivoted to the biggest Ponzi scheme ever, bad as that is (and the economic depression it will cause), it pales into insignificance compared with the damage these fucks would do with AGI (or goddess forbid ASI with the alignment they would try to give it).

You’ll have nothing and (won’t) like it a few years later, SaaS taking over powered by all those ‘AI’ datacentres. Peak phone could even have happened if RAM becomes prohibitive, instead they’re just windows on an all centralized, subscription web services. I see it as a pretty existential threat for my preferred way of life.

What are the odds SAltman and the circular investment crew are pivoting to a pump and dump scheme on server hardware (as well as just GPGPUs) after finally admitting to themselves LLMs have hit a wall not even trillions of dollars will fix (architecture failure, no AGI for you, no getting away from those pesky workers like promised). If everything pans out nicely the world will end up with a bunch of new chip fabs (a real bottleneck) and nothing to use them for, cheap computers for all. Probably won’t, instead we’ll get a geopolitical shitshow as China (and hopefully Europe) will have functional, actually producing valuable stuff, economies. What happens to the US is left as an exercise for the reader.
So, sandbox the extensions, a practical, sensible step on the path to browser as OS (contentious, but doesn’t that seem where things are going, and if we lose firefox…). I use gOS and my solution for Pay is a Visa in my phone case… As to AirTags there are solutions for finding things locally but nothing with the reach of AirTags if you left something somewhere else due to apple installing it on all their phones. I find analogue solutions will do personally. Find my phone still works. iCloud and photos I replaced with a homeserver with Immich, also pihole there to sort ads, but you can get most of the way there with proton if that’s intimidating.

FWIW, I took the plunge with a iFixit kit to replace my Pixel7 spicy pillow battery. I’m reasonably handy but had never done a glued phone before. I sprung for a clampy, watched the video and it all went extremely smooth, ~ 1 hour.

You should be fine on gOS for 6 yrs+, which is how long google promised to keep up with security updates. The device tree (think hardware drivers), which is what google removed with pixel 10 is what is causing grief, is already there for lower pixels. Unless, of course, google comes up with some new fuckery to invalidate the usability of the security updates (pray I don’t alter the deal further…)
