Lol, no idea. She mentioned hers was melted and wouldn’t charge and asked if I wanted it while I was on that side of the country. The plastic around the USB charging port was completely melted/burned. Luckily the port itself is mounted on its own daughterboard and I just build/wired up a new one.

Ended up with a Quest 3 shortly after experimenting.

The Quest 2 should work fine for all of this. I got started down this path after rebuilding my sister’s that had caught fire and melted 😆

There’s a Linux VR Discord that’s super helpful of you’re in that ecosystem, but basically look into WiVRn and ALVR projects, install, and play with configs. It’s easier to do than it looks but depends on your distro, video card etc.

On my system both ALVR then WiVRn installs were as simple as installing the packages and running them. Some games complained with WiVRn but all I had to do was add a string to the launch options in Steam that was provided by the launcher for just such a case.

Linux VR has come a long way for sure! I run all my VR stuff on Linux and have for two years now. Beyond needing ALVR or WiVRn to stream wirelessly to my headset it’s painless and I get higher framerates than my friends on Windows.

It’s not like the thing is going to learn from its mistake. But cool, waste those tokens to have it explain that if fucked up after it fucks up lol.

There’s a lot of VR chat communities that heavily self moderate that crap out so adults can actually enjoy games/social instances. This approach created a whooooole lotta Wild West space full of every IP stealing debauchery you can imagine, but like the early Internet also allowed for a ton of creativity and fun. Meta’s approach was to try to simply not allow anything that would be inappropriate for anyone ever to sanitize for corporate sponsors, leading to a sterile and soulless waste of time.

Utterly shocked which one has regular users creating and exploring.

So far in my friend group it’s just CoD, Destiny…forget the others. I don’t play those but literally every game I do wanna play just works for the last few years. 🤷‍♂️

You’d be surprised how much can be done at the edge with current cameras. I’m not sure exactly how these particular ones are set up, but the other major players in the space (Axis,Bosch,Panasonic) all have pretty surprising levels of local compute dedicated to “AI”, and leveraging external VMS platforms can exponentially increase capabilities. It’s pretty idiot proof once set up, as it’s aimed at desk jockies that monitor and report with minimal systems training.

Again, not this specific system but this stuff is far from sci-fi anymore.

Spray paint. Krylon makes “stained glass” paints. Something dark and thick like violet would be pretty effective.

I work in security engineering, including massive video systems. With any unit made in the last 5 years and any software past entry level consumer grade this is a non-issue. Especially if someone is using descriptive visual search when pulling up video vs just scanning through every motion event.

Follow Sony’s play and call it an “OtherOS” mode. You don’t even have to support it once you’re already shipping under the new classification!
