This wording is wild. They did not say that AV1 uses patented material - they said that AV1 includes some technologies that are in HEVC. Dolby doesn’t have a case, and they know it. They are trying to use wording that twists the truth to make it sound like they are in the right.

Just one of many reasons I haven’t bought a TV or watched TV in over 15 years. If there is a series I want to watch I will either get the blurays or put on my fancy hat and pull out the rum.

Video streaming bitrates is the one that most affects my day to day. You could stream 1080p for free back in the day. I also believe the ability to post server emotes in other servers is also something that was locked behind the introduction of Nitro, but I can’t confirm since at that time I was only in a single channel.

Which is perfectly fine. Not everybody needs to search for things day to day. There are some professions where search is important; law and software are two which are more relevant to me. Getting accurate, non hallucinating results is really important.

My experience with SO is that I’ll look up a question about how to do something using X method and all the answers are like “why are you using X?” or “here’s how to do it using Y.”. You rarely find people answering the questions and instead find people trying to spread gospel about a certain tech that you aren’t using.
