Do you know the details about the milkweed? Here in CO we have a native milkweed that many treat like it’s a weed. I often see people planting the type of milkweed I see in the south. I don’t think the monarch cares much but from my limited experience I’ve only seen caterpillars on the native variety in my yard (I have both).
I feel like for most people they think about supporting bee populations and they only see the honey bee when it’s the native local bees that need the most support.
Foot in the door technique is a timeless way to get what you want. People seem oblivious to it.
I can guarantee you these tech bros take it seriously. Because they don’t have to pay taxes and have boat loads of money it means they are quite serious.
Oh its much worse than that. There is this segment of rich tech bros who have emerged from an unregulated silicon valley. After decades of having their egos stroked there is a sort of tech fetish cult emerging. Thiel is the most prominent example of this but there are many others who are into this as well. They literally believe that AI will herald some sort of religious revelation. If you are opposed to AI or seek to regulate AI of course you are the antichrist. I wish I was making this up.
The only reason this matters is because these rich tech bro assholes haven’t ever had to pay taxes and the more money you have, the louder your voice is and the more you can pay to influence politics.
Oh wow this is a much needed move from them. Keeping their data only in the US is a huge risk these days.

I would like to know how we got to this point. One article I read made the point that counter culture was always a product of conservatism. I don’t know if I agree with that. I felt like tech in the 70s-90s was more utopian. Tech will democratize the world, it will level the playing field, it will bring an age of information to everyone, etc. These words aren’t much different from the life changing™ slogans used about each software update now so it feels more convoluted. I’d like to know because personally I want to know if it was just me who felt utopian about this stuff back then and its always been this downward spiral, or did something change at some point?

It says one of the main reasons the city is sinking is ground water extraction. Is there any effort to stop this to prevent further sinking? Can they bring in water from elsewhere?

Its been like this my entire life. When I was in high school in the 90s one of my teachers said the greatest battle your generation will fight will be for privacy. Little did they know there would be no fight. The general public doesn’t seem interested in caring about things and voting with their wallet. Now we’ve reached this point where the game is up and companies have realized the masses will buy their products because people perceive that they “need” them and can’t do without which gives them free reign to do whatever they want.

There has been a concerted effort to isolate Canada and the US from each other in recent years. Also within Canada itself the rise of US style individualism has been depressing to see. Its wild how much social media has been weaponized by most nation states to use against others.
And all that data does by definition exclude: “AI” is not built on “all of humankind’s knowledge” but based on whatever a mostly western view of the world and what is relevant looks like.
Its based on a specific western worldview the techbros have, and want to project, while drinking whatever flavor of kool-aid is seen as being edgy at the moment.

The amount of dismantling this administration is doing is severely under reported. Anything tied to science, education, regulation, services, government orgs, infrastructure, etc is being slowly and systematically reduced or eliminated. Those are broad topics but anything that falls under them you can drill down and find bad news. It will take decades to recover from this as things stand.
