They didn’t entirely miss the mark there. They publicly released the version after that and the world became worse. That certainly fits for some definition of ‘dangerous’, even tho it’s probably not how they were thinking.

Yes! It’s completely silly. A ‘poll’ designed exactly for the people that want a noai option, to be shared in places like this so those people (like me) can get the tiny satisfaction of hitting No.

They were never wondering what the result would be, they were never trying to gauge their userbase’s preferences. It’s just a page they thought people would share to spread awareness of DDG.

Oof, this still isn’t up on F-Droid or either main app store. That’s a shame, I thought this moment would be a great time for Loops to get some user base, but it seems like it’s still not ready for wider adoption.

That said, it does look a lot better now than it did a few months ago when I last tried it. Here’s hoping it picks up some momentum. I finally tried TikTok last year, and was really impressed by the breadth of videos and how quickly it was able to start showing me things I enjoyed. With the recent change in ownership, I don’t know that I’ll revisit it much if at all. Would take quite a lot to replicate even a little bit of the zeitgeist TikTok had going. But like with Lemmy and Mastodon/Bsky, I’m hoping I can do my little part by choosing where to put my attention. Just don’t know that I’m going to find much there I care to see, for now.

Yep, I think that’s the real terror of it, is that the line between ad and content will blur even further. There’s already everything ranging from astroturfing to paid endorsements, but eventually AI maybe can get good at finding that line of what you think is trustworthy and crossing it maliciously.

They mean most of Allianz’s (1.4m) North America customers, not data of most people in the US.

First read of the headline, I thought it was another Equifax level thing - where a single company has way too much data.

I was gonna mention rtings as an alternative to this, then I saw them included, which is nice.

The one thing I miss in this tool is display lag. It’s basically included in the rtings score; but with all the other specific filters, that’s one I’d want up front.

I appreciate them trying to set expectations. But then I also think a statement like this throws fuel on the fire, making more people want to scalp it.

Far from perfect, but I think it’s good to have a layer that very visibly shows ‘yes, this is the account you want’.

Domains are a worthwhile addition, but they run into almost the same problem as usernames and handles. Can be made misleading easily - sure, I could often go to the web address and verify it (if they don’t put up a convincing fake site), but that’s much lower visibilty.

Eg, you can probably register [email protected] or similar and get it by some folks just as easily as registering the Twitter handle. There’s a payment step to get the domain, but that’s about it.

The centralization problem you mention is a good point though. It was a fine system, if you felt like you could trust Twitter as a verifier. Today obviously, one could not. But Bsky seems to at least theoretically have a ‘choose your verification provider’ idea in mind, which would (again theoretically) resolve a lot of that issue.

Verification badge was good, the dumb thing Twitter did was throw it away by letting anyone pay for it.

I can’t offer much in the way of experience - but I have at least wanted to replace Amazon wishlist functionality. I’ve never gotten around to making the jump, so I can’t really say that I personally recommend any of these.
