I would imagine that having a full control of the underlaying system would allow a wrapper to be developed for the Play Services, so it would not to be able to spy on you so well. Just feeding some partially spoofed data to it, or even whitelist it to work only with the apps that require it.
Here’s a tough one: Why does Home turn on both of my LG TVs random times of day, both at the same time, even in the middle of the night. LG support pointed towards Apple about this, and indeed it stopped right after I deleted both TVs from my Home app. I have a ton of iOS/iPadOS/macOS/watchOS/tvOS devices so impossible to tell which of them might it have been, if any, but they all are running ~latest public versions, and macOS is ruled out by not being on on couple of occasions. Checked that there are no Automations or Shortcuts etc. anywhere.
This is almost as infuriating as when Apple Watch on my wrist used to (not lately anymore) wake me up in the middle of the night saying it has updates it can install, not respecting my Sleep mode absolutely-no-notifications setting. And there not being a ”Install update when put in charger” option instead of the ”Install this night” (but yeah this is dumb UX not bug)
When we talk about these browsers with ultra marginal market share, this unfortunately equals to unique. If it could spoof for example ”latest chrome on latest vanilla windows, using the most common resolution screen”, then I’d see some actual value.
Is it easily selfhostable again? I used to have it on my private server but eventually it ate some shit and the configuration of different helpers became too much of a burden.
For us advanced users true, but for the bulk of people where ”just use this app instead” has worked previously, will not do it anymore. Whole lotta more hoops to jump through and google knows many will not be able to.

This 100%. I have so many brands in my black list to never consider after happening to get interrupted by their ad, not even neccessarily a dumb ad. Reoccurring ones do that quite effectively too: Seeing an ad once is maybe no biggie (unless it’s long/dumb), twice starts to annoy, three times and you’re out.

Nope, I would not call 160kbps Vorbis low bitrate, it’s roughly quality of 192kbps MP3. Only the ”popularity=0” stuff (so stuff with so few listens that Spotify does not keep record of) were re-encoded to 75kbps Opus, which as a modern codec is much better than it sounds like but of course re-encode is not great for already lossy stuff.
For purists there are those Tidal downloader sites available everywhere for free lossless music, even 24-bit hires FLAC.
This needs to be pointed out more in all posts related to the guy, and in YouTube too. Scummy shit like his programs were quite common back then but the way he acts around that topic now deserves all the hate imo.

This is ALSO a guy behind many of those ”your PC is at risk” scams back in the day, selling useless optimization tools that extorted money from victims. He specifically quit Microsoft to pursue that and was even convicted later. Still chooses to downplay and try to hide what he did.
