Lol I was just talking to my wife about that yesterday and how it’s exactly like AI.

If you read something in the newspaper about your job, you’re like “these fucking idiots got this all backwards.” If you see AI output of an attempt at your job, it’s the same thing.

But if you read an article about someone else’s job, you think “that makes sense.” Same about seeing AI trying to do someone else’s job.

Unfortunately that’s the crux of the issue. The people who have written and signed this bill aren’t either - and they weren’t as big of a person as you to recognize that.

At the end of the day, 3D printing gcode is telling your printer to spit out a shape. And you simply cannot ban shapes. Am I printing a firing pin or a part for my shoe rack? There’s no way to tell. Any politician that’s telling you there is is either ignorant or lying to you.

Under the proposal, printers would have to evaluate STL files, CAD files, or other geometric code using a firearm blueprint detection algorithm and block files flagged as capable of producing a firearm or illegal firearm parts, including conversion devices.

California’s Department of Justice, or another relevant state agency, would have until January 1, 2028, to publish performance standards for detection algorithms and software control processes.

This is the problem when lawmakers write technical bills without speaking to technical people. They’re going to publish standards for evaluating if your gcode is a firearm or firearm part? THAT’S FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE

What’s worse is they’ve added it to Android Auto. A couple days ago I told it to call my wife and it proceeded to search for local businesses containing my wife’s name.

Bambu has been adding controls to their printers to force commands from your slicer to go through their servers before being sent to your printer. This had caused some stuff to stop working, like 3rd party AMS systems.

One guy forked (copied it and made his own changes to) their code and removed the restriction. Bambu didn’t like that and threatened him to take it down, while accusing him of falsely impersonating them to make API calls to their servers.

The dude is like “I didn’t impersonate shit, I just forked your code.” Bambu’s code is just a fork of other open source software, all under an open source license. So they have no authority to tell someone not to fork their code, since it’s all open source licensed.

So a lot of people have banded together to push back against Bambu and are ready to take them to court if necessary. They see this as a step by Bambu to try to make their printers more restricted (only use their addons, their filament, go through their cloud, etc).

I love that she was genuinely baffled. Hope it makes her reexamine her thoughts on AI.

What 3d printing software do you use in your country that detects if gun parts are being printed?

Because as far as I know, that’s impossible.

Damn that’s a wild ass story. I just finished reading Michael Connelly’s The Proving Ground which touches on the topic of liability when it AI encourages crimes. I thought the story was a theoretical scenario that could maybe happen in the future. Didn’t realize this shit was already happening - and even more fantastical that the scenario in fiction!
