Revenue isn’t what defines a darling; it’s about being universally loved and a popular choice. The one who is always topping youtube review lists as a best-buy. And especially when they started small and are still growing.

Yes - that might in turn lead to becoming the dominant player with the most revenue, but the revenue is the result, not the cause.

  • I just go full anti tech, which people find ironic since I’m in the tech industry, and they poke fun at that

It’s funny, because they’ve managed to draw completely the wrong conclusion. You aren’t anti-tech despite working in the tech industry, no - you’re anti-tech because of working in the tech industry.

  • I’m glad to see people going public with these sorts of shenanigans.

The thing about maker communities is that makers generally appreciate the importance and ethics of “not stealing other people’s shit,” and putting companies on blast for it does in this community hurt their bottom line.

And when it hurts their bottom line, that drives action.

Elegoo wouldn’t release their firmware for the Centauri Carbon claiming it was proprietary, until someone proved it was just modified Klipper, and therefore in breach of Klipper’s license. And the community backlash was strong enough that Elegoo were compelled to release it.

So yeah, do the good work and keep making these companies accountable.

  • The expiry date has been a necessary and useful tool, but these dots seem like they could be a good idea if they can actually sense when spoilage happens.

Meat could have been exposed to bad conditions that makes it spoil before the expected date.

But maybe even bigger is that the date is always going to be very much on the side of caution, so it might avoid waste where people tend to bin stuff as soon as the expiry hits, even though that food may still be perfectly good.

I backed the original Oculus Rift, and felt massively betrayed when they sold to Meta. :(

For years since I’ve been waiting for A VR solution that plays nice with Linux and is at least somewhat privacy-respecting, and I have been absolutely unwilling to buy a Quest device or anything else. I want to play VR but I’m not willing to sell my soul for it. So it’s been an unhappy but conscious boycott from me.

I too then am super looking forward to the Steam Frame because it’s the device I need to get back into VR and feel happy and excited about it, rather than disgusted.

  • The headline is a little misleading.

As I understand it, they haven’t retroactively removed the HEVC capability from any devices that already shipped with it enabled.

Rather, they have stopped including it in new ones of the same model or in certain new models, even though those machines still have CPUs which have the capability built in for it.

This has resulted in e.g. businesses buying a laptop which works fine for conference calls and other stuff, then buying another laptop the “exact same” and suddenly it’s nerfed.

  • I guess the beefier your system is the less you will notice the impact of a greedy OS (because thats a fixed/absolute overhead) while the performance hit of having to translate directx through Proton will always be there (because that’s a percent-based overhead for each rendered frame)

So for the most top-end rigs, probably still Windows will squeeze a few more FPS. But it’s close.

At the end of the day Linux and Windows are both pretty comparable for gaming performance, so we shouldn’t worry about that as a deciding factor in which OS to choose, and can decide based on other merits.
