If there’s this baked in idea that when they make an online only game it’s eventually going to have to have server software open sourced or disable online checks, they’ll soon adapt.

I remember when everybody was using Ask. That was a long, long time ago.

I’m not quite sure how people use Debian on a desktop machine. Do you not fall asleep while you’re using it?

No point getting upset about this, it’s inevitable. So many FOSS programmers work thanklessly for hours and now there’s some tool to take loads of that work away, of course they’re going to use it. I know loads of people complain about it but used responsibly it can take care of so much of the mundane work. I used to spend 10% of my time writing code then 90% debugging it. If I do that 10% then give it to Claude to go over I find it just works.

Why are these companies wanting to pay to infuriate me? If I want to watch something and I’m suddenly interrupted by a 90 second unskippable intrusion I’m not going to have a positive relationship with your company.

I kinda get it though. I think every single time in my life I’ve sent a document in the non-Microsoft format I’ve got a reply saying they couldn’t open it. That’s from LibreOffice and from Mac.

How are Anthropic left wing? I thought they were regarded as being not much better than ChatGPT?

I checked with ChatGPT and Claude and they both said to walk. Then I said “Think about it” and Claude changed to drive but ChatGPT doubled down. ChatGPT was on 5.2 and set to Auto. Claude was on Sonnet 4.5.

No small ask. New factories, new supply chains, more staff, etc.

In the unlikely event I had to create a porn site account even the NSA wouldn’t be able to link it back to me.

Office is one of the most recognisable brands in the world. Why have they jammed it into a brand which is already toxic?

They should make it a law to require adequate parental controls to exist on a phone in a way that parents can use them, then teach the parents how to use them. If your kid goes and starts viewing porn then it’s your own fault.

I honestly don’t mind as long as it’s down with permission. At least Microsoft are trying to do something interesting, computers are so boring nowadays. You could take any of the operating systems and wind them back five years and I probably wouldn’t notice.

The flooding a network thing really isn’t an issue, they’ll only flood for the first packet just to find the way and then it stops. Fire up Wireshark on a different machine and transfer a file between two other machines, you won’t see anything. I don’t know too much about WiFi but it probably does the same, it’s just a bridge to the same network.
Wired is probably better because machines can estimate your location from the SSID and they can leak the password giving access to the network.

Switches will flood a network when they don’t know the location of a MAC address but this should only happen for the very first packet which is more likely to be DHCP or some boring background thing like that. As soon as the correct devices get the packet and replies then each switch along the way will update its MAC address table and they’ll know exactly which port to use until it expires (which depends on the switch, I don’t have a ballpark idea).

I’ve never been asked for any of this stuff but I think it’s literally because my email account is so old.

Everyone’s scared of Reform getting in and yet Reform are the only ones promising to reverse all this. All this is done based off the back of a 2016 survey where parents said they were worried about kids watching porn on the internet, but the survey gave no indication of what a solution would look like and gave no mention to online age verification and banning VPNs.

I don’t see why people hate Spotify so much. I used to go out and pay £10 for an album decades ago, multiple times a month sometimes. Now I can basically listen to anything for the price of an album a month. Plus, you can play Spotify on just about any device, even all the open source solutions that Netflix blocked like 15 years ago. On top of that it’s Swedish rather than American.

Im genuinely curious as to what themes and DE you’re using that looks better. In Windows everything is slick and polished, stuff slides and bounces around, the colours are consistent and work together, it’s all pretty elegant. I’m using KDE right now and all that I get is the start menu thing changes shade when I hover the mouse over it. I also use Gnome and XFCE, Gnome is pretty good and XFCE is obviously really basic.
They said details will be released once it’s been patched. If somebody has an Apple priv sec they’re not going to giving it away for free.
