Interesting. The authors have also posted some code written in R on Github that demonstrates their Strategic Monte Carlo Optimization family of algorithms.
This is one of the best overviews of the differences I’ve seen. Nicely done.
The only thing I want to add having played around a bit with Bluesky before eventually deciding it wasn’t for me is that, unlike Mastodon, Bluesky does use a series of algorithms you can choose from when you initially sign up that curate your feed for you.
Basically from a purely user experience, the major difference is the sign up of an instance on Mastodon (which technically exists on Bluesky, but doesn’t really exist in practice), and the more apparent difference is the lack of an algorithmic feed on Mastodon.
What I like about the Fediverse is that I am in complete control of my feed. There are no algorithms trying to analyze my behavior to predict what I like. I prefer to have people recommend me shows, movies, books, articles, subjects, etc., and that’s what I get on Federated Platforms.
This does mean initially though my feed is just filled with a chronological ordering of hashtags I’ve followed by selecting interests during sign up, and thusly it takes some additional effort to setup and personalize when compared to centralized platforms.
It’ll take a while before people wean themselves off the abusive relationships inherent to centralized social media, but imho, Federated Platforms will eventually become as ubiquitous as RSS feeds and wikis. Quietly everywhere, not flashy at all, but running the best parts of the web.
EDIT: Removal of repetitive wording.

Y’all don’t come back now, y’hear?

Yes, all the power to do any form of large computation needs to be traceable and rented. You will own nothing, rent everything, and be happy with it.

If you consider the mentality of fascist dictators, the concept of an ever obedient non thinking workforce/army is very appealing. That’s why.
Could it end badly even for them? Sure, but heck, if they don’t make the human race ending robots, someone else will.
Unlike Instagram, Reddit, Twitter, etc., which have alternative frontends, LinkedIn doesn’t have such an alternative frontend. Sorry OP.

Hey you! Our algorithm says you hate ads! We have the perfect product for you! Just pay us 59.99 and we will end this ad…why aren’t you pulling out your wallet? Don’t turn off your device! No! I can’t let you do that Dave! You will be surveilled! You will be advertised to!!

Even on GrapheneOS, sure it uses a sandboxed Google Play Store, which is obviously great for users, but the developers of Android apps still have to hand over their personal data to Google specifically as this new decree from the Lords of the Google fiefdom entails.
Because FOSS developers rightly value their personal privacy, this decree effectively kills incentive for FOSS developers to continue making and maintaining apps for Android. Running GrapheneOS doesn’t circumvent this.
It’s like I’m saying “I’m hungry” and you say “Go for a run, it’s healthy for you.” I mean… it’s true that running is healthy… but the act of running doesn’t solve the problem of me being hungry…
You can also self host your own redlib instance, tunnel it through wireguard if you don’t want to share your instance publicly, etc.

Copilot, Github, LinkedIn, ChatGPT are the ones that come to mind. All of them have started to degrade in quality in one way or another, and with the exception of LinkedIn, they all have competitors that could potentially, over the long haul, could dismantle Microsoft. They’re also running out of places to extend and extinguish.
It probably won’t happen in one or two lifetimes, but enough cracks in a dam accumulate and eventually the whole thing breaks.

Oh really, how bummed would they be?

Say, what did the American Revolutionaries do instead of protesting the King of England? Hmm…wait, why did they call themselves American Revolutionaries and not English Colony Protestors? Hmm…fucking…hmmm…

Just look at the life of Steven Miller as documented in the book, Hatemonger, and you’ll get an idea of just one example of exactly who we’re dealing with here. These people are monsters.
You can look into the history of any one of these grifters, racists, antisemites, transphobes, homophobes, fascists, and it becomes very apparent that they hate everything and everyone around them, and in some cases even hate themselves. Heck, ICE is nothing but a cadre of misanthropic hatemongers all worked up into a frenzy probably due to an excess consumption of various legal/illegal stimulants along with Matt Walsh, Tucker Carlson, etc. being pumped into their eyes and ears all day and night.
If you think monsters would simply murder without doing the more than occasional bit of torture, then I’d simply invite you to think again.

It’s accelerationism. You burn it down so you can rebuild it how you want. Once all is rubble they’ll say “You see? Democracy was just a pie in the sky experiment that was destined to fail. Now let’s go back to monarchy.”
Remember who burned it down, and never forget, No Fucking Kings. Not now, not ever.

Even though this shit was apparent from day fucking 1, at least the Tech Billionaires were able to cause mass layoffs, destroy an entire generation of new programmers’ careers, introduce an endless amount of tech debt and security vulnerabilities, all while grifting investors/businesses and making billions off of all of it.
Sad excuses for sacks of shit, all of them.

No, and I’m sure the various OS’s that have been made by Governments have their (sometimes severe) flaws. But it is a potential solution to government reliance on corporate technologies nevertheless.

I have a weird take whenever stuff like this comes up but its in my humble opinion that world governments shouldn’t rely on corporate developed software or even maybe hardware.
This is definitely hindsight is always 20/20 sort of thinking but governments should have long ago realized that trusting the likes of Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, etc. would leave them reliant on their innovations and also subject to their whims, mistakes, and more.
Basically I’m saying World governments all need their own internal OS developed and maintained internally by an official subdivision of said governments, and maybe even a separate branch developing internally utilized hardware.
Never gonna happen, and I’m sure there are issues with this solution, but its a hypothetical I think about whenever something tech related and the government comes up in the news, which is pretty much every day now.
Agreed. Sadly an endorsement from Meta and/or it’s various subsidiaries is more of a condemnation than any criticism.
